Traditional Urushi Coating Basic-1

Basic Urushi Coating (Traditional coating) - 1

Urushi coating process has 3 steps.
Generally, each coating process uses different Urushi (Note: Urushi must be required to adjust for easy use to meet each process and coating target. Urushi is coated on the surface of different materials, such as wood, iron, paper... The treatment of basic surface is called Hon-kataji process, which has many surface-treating process in order to coat Urushi by target material. This explores Basic Coating using wood surface (most common and popular).
(Note: You may notice many different types Urushi names, as actual product names, or as coating process material names, as category names. But, most stores are selling under actual product names only, but not selling at Urushi coating process material names or Urushi category names.)
  • Kiji Chousei (coating base surface treatment)
  • Shitaji (preparing coating base surface)
  • Coating (coating and filing/polishing)

Kiji Chousei
Kiji
Usually Kiji is made by Kiji-shi (craftsmen), e.g. Saya, Armors, Table-wear, Furniture...
Kokuso

Making flat surface. Apply Kokuso to uneven area (specially flaws and connection).
(Kokuso is mixed with wooden powder, rice paste, Ki-Urushi, just like putty. )
Sanding/polishing by very fine sand paper and water stone after dried up.

Kijigatame

Coating Ki-Urushi, in order to make harder surface as well as staying 2nd layer Urushi well.

Nunokise

In order to reinforce edge or connection area, apply hemp cloth, rice paper and others to reinforce area with Nori-Urushi (mixed with Sejime Urushi and rice paste), using Urushi Hera.

Shitaji
Making actual Urushi coating smooth surface.

Type of Shitaji
Honkataji
This is the typical traditional Shitaji. Coating fine Jinoko (fine diatomite powder), or Tonoko (fine water stone powder - Uchigumori or Nagataki stone) for several times to make glossy smooth surface.
Sabiji
Coating Sabi-Urushi (mixing fine water stone powder and Sejime Urushi) for several times to make Shitaji.
Jitsuke
Mixed with Jinoko (burned fine diatomite powder) and Ki-Urushi and apply surface using Hera. Sanding/polishing by fine sanding paper and water stone. (repeat 2-3 times)
Apply Kiriko-Urushi (mixed with Jinoko, Tonoko, and Ki-Urushi), using Hera. Polishing out the surface after dried. (repeat 2-3 times) Kiriko-Jitsuke
Sabitsuke

Apply Sabi-Urushi (mixed with Tonoko and Ki-Urushi) using Hera. Polishing out the surface after dried (repeat 2-3 times) Usually, the 1st layer is used a bit rough Sabi-Urushi, 2nd layer is mid sized Sabi-Urushi, last layer must be fine Sabi-Urushi.

Nuri (Coating)
Begin Urushi coating after finished Kiji surface, using Urushi-hake (brush).

Shitanuri

During Shitanuri process, mostly Nakanuri Urushi (category name) must be used. If the finishing is simple black color, Kuro-nakanuri Urushi (category name as well as actual product name) will be used, other finishing, mostly Suki-Naka Urushi (category name) will be used. (Nakanuri Urushi family does not have oily content.)
After dried, water polishing with Sumi (charcoal).

Nakanuri
During Nakanuri process, mostly Nakanuri Urushi (category name) must be used.

(Uwanuri Urushi family has oily content, coating finish will be blossy finish.)

This is simple coating process. If the finishing is Kawari-nuri (Kashoku Nuri), it required other coating process.
Douzuri
Applying Tonoko or Sumi (charcoal) powder to make smooth glossy surface, using cotton cloth. This surface polishing process is called Douzuri.

The cross section of coatings
Cross section of coating
This is the cross section of Urushi coating. Each layer must be much more thin layer at actual Urushi coating due to shorter dry-time. This is the traditional basic Urushi coating process. You may simplify Kiji and Shitaji process using Cashew Urushi Shitaji kit, focus on Kawarinuri (Kashoku Nuri) coating. Please refer to the published books and videos for more detail Urushi coating.
